Info:
The kitchen is part of an ongoing renovation of an existing mid-century home in Cincinnati, Ohio. All work was designed by the architect and constructed by the architect with teams composed of present and former University of Cincinnati co-op students.
The original kitchen configuration was small and boxy, with an attached
laundry room at the corner of the house. The new design called for the
removal of all of the partitions in the space, allowing for a clean and open
kitchen that exploited the existing band of jalousie windows that wrapped
the corner of the house.
A new floor, composed of 2' x 4' cement fiber board panels, was installed to
replace the existing vinyl floor. A large, floating island workspace with
base lighting occupies the center of the room. Cast concrete counter tops
were fabricated for the work surfaces. Custom colored, back-painted glass sliding panels conceal drawer units, miscellaneous storage, as well as the dishwasher. Custom aluminum plate sliding pantry doors and closet doors line the perimeter of the space. A hand-rusted steel display box with perforated rusted steel sliding doors provides storage for glasses and dishes. An integrated seating area defines the opposite end of the room. The existing window wall was clad in aluminum to provide a continuous backsplash surface.
