The project represented here was a ten week collaborative exercise centered on material research and fabrication techniques, with a specific focus on the exploration of the space between thinking and making. It was crucial to remove the students from the safe environment of the design studio and place them directly in contact with the myriad of participants that constitute place-making; including clients, users, landlords, suppliers, fabricators, trades-people, and neighbors. While it is impossible to walk in someone else's shoes, the proximity and immediacy of experiencing and participating in the particular environment was pivotal in the students' comprehension of context.
